Main Job Description Of An Answering Service / Call Center Operator

The job of an answering service phone operator is to answer calls and either take a message or transfer the call. It may require the use of multiple telephones, computers, and/or a switchboard. Depending on the business your answering for, an operator may need to know certain information in order to answer customer questions.

Different Titles

A phone operator can go by many different names and titles, here a just a few:

Duties

A phone operator is expected to be capable of completing some of the following tasks:

  • Take calls from customers, and how the knowledge to answer general questions
  • Sell products to interested customers, or intrigue customers into purchasing product
  • Be personal to each customer
  • Stay organized for each call from each customer, be able to file in databases information from each call
  • Set up the shipment of products, brochures, and any other information to interested customers.
  • Stay on top of clerical duties, such as:
    • Faxing
    • Filing
    • Filling out paperwork
    • Credit reference checks

Conditions of the Workplace

Each operator can be called to work in different places, depending on the type of business for which he or she is contracted. Some of the places are:

  • Does Work for Other Organizations

  • A Water or Energy organization
  • Help Desk Call Center

Each phone operator can choose their hours, for operators can work full-time, part-time, or on a casual basis. Some may be required to do shifts and/or weekend hours.
